In 1977, two spacecraft were launched almost simultaneously: Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. They were identical, each weighing about 800 kilograms. Their dimensions were roughly 0.5 x 2 x 2 meters. Each had a dish antenna nearly 4 meters in diameter. Their mission was to observe the outer planets of our solar system. After passing the last of them (Uranus and Neptune), it was decided to let them continue on their journey \u2014 out into interstellar space. To this day, both spacecraft are still operating and transmitting. They\u2019re now traveling at about 20 kilometers per second. <\/p>\n\n

Mom: But how could we possibly catch up with the Voyagers? They were launched about 40 years ago! <\/p>\n\n

Adrianos: We now have very powerful rockets that can put satellites into orbits at very high speeds. I think we could easily surpass that 20 kilometers per second speed. <\/p>\n\n

Daphne: Each Voyager carries a golden record! <\/p>\n\n

This record contains sounds from Earth, like thunder.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Mr. A: The idea for the Voyager Golden Record originally came from the famous Carl Sagan. In the next photo, he\u2019s holding the original design of the record. That design included two nude humans \u2014 a woman and a man. Unfortunately, NASA didn\u2019t allow the depiction of these two humans in the nude! <\/p>\n\n

Daphne: It includes greetings in 55 languages!<\/p>\n\n

Mr. A: Among those languages, Ancient Greek is also included. A professor from Cornell University reads the greeting in Ancient Greek:\u201c\u039f\u1f35\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c2 \u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u1fbf \u1f14\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5 \u03c7\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5! \u0395\u1f30\u03c1\u03b7\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u1ff6\u03c2 \u03c0\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2 \u03c6\u03af\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u1f10\u03bb\u03b7\u03bb\u03cd\u03b8\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd \u03c6\u03af\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9.\u201d(Hoitines pot\u2019 este, chairete! Daphne: It even includes instructions on how to find us on Earth!<\/p>\n\n

Dad: The record also includes several pieces of classical music (Bach, Mozart) and more modern ones like \u201cJohnny B. Goode\u201d by Chuck Berry.<\/p>\n\n

Even though the Beatles agreed, EMI didn\u2019t allow it.<\/p>\n\n

So the Beatles\u2019 music isn\u2019t traveling beyond the solar system into interstellar space. But \u201cJohnny B.
