This satellite always looks down (towards Earth) and not up (towards the stars).  <\/p>\n\n<p>Its purpose is to provide scientists with the necessary data so that weather forecasting models become more accurate. We also want to gain a better understanding of climate change.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The entire satellite was transported from France to French Guiana for launch aboard the Ariane 6 rocket, using a specially built ship, the Canopee. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Transportation\/Ariane\/Shipping_rockets_Ariane_on_board\">https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Transportation\/Ariane\/Shipping_rockets_Ariane_on_board<\/a><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/issue-14-metop-photo-02-1024x578.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/issue-14-metop-photo-02-1024x578.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/issue-14-metop-photo-02-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/issue-14-metop-photo-02-768x434.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/issue-14-metop-photo-02.jpg 1204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>The Canopee is a ship that moves only with its sails. Many researchers from the University of Southampton in England (the same city from which the Titanic departed!) contributed to its construction. Many consider it the \u201cship of the future,\u201d since it does not use fossil fuels\u2014it sails only with the wind.    <\/p>\n\n<p>After about one month, it successfully reached French Guiana for launch.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Transportation\/Ariane\/Shipping_rockets_Ariane_on_board\">https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Transportation\/Ariane\/Shipping_rockets_Ariane_on_board<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>The Launch:<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2025\/06\/Ariane_6_payload_on_board_MetOp-SG-A1_arrives_in_Kurou\">https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2025\/06\/Ariane_6_payload_on_board_MetOp-SG-A1_arrives_in_Kurou<\/a><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ariane 6 Launches METOP-SG-A1\" width=\"540\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GXI-hvKqAz8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>After a few days of patience and communication between ground stations and the scientific instruments onboard the satellite, it was confirmed that everything was working perfectly.
