Inside, the rocket contains the James Webb Space Telescope, which then successfully put it into orbit around the Earth. For an earlier article on the James Webb Space Telescope, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/en\/the-james-webb-space-telescope-2\/\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ariane 5 is a European Space Agency (ESA) rocket. It had about 82 successful launches between 2003 and 2017. Its purpose was to place satellites in orbits around the Earth.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2023 it launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/en\/news-mission-juice\/\">the JUICE satellite<\/a> to Jupiter. After this satellite, Ariane 5 was retired and handed over to the new Ariane 6 satellite, which we hope will be as worthy as its predecessor.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notable Ariane 5 rocket launches are as follows:<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. 1996, Cluster I, rocket 501. <\/h2>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It failed, and the rocket exploded seconds after launch.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/6\/69\/Cluster_insignia.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:269px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ariane 5 carried 4 satellites that would orbit the earth to study the Sun&#8217;s magnetic field in 3 dimensions and how the solar wind affects the earth. We know very well that particles emitted by the Sun create t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/en\/what-is-northern-lights-aurora-borealis\/\">he northern lights<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/en\/captain-gg-aurora-australis\/\">the aurora australis.<\/a> <br\/><br\/>Unfortunately, Ariane 5 flight 501 failed.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/maxresdefault-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9843\" style=\"width:710px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/maxresdefault-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/maxresdefault-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/maxresdefault-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/maxresdefault.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The satellite was rebuilt and Cluster II was successfully launched in 2004 by a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. 1999, XMM-Newton, rocket 504.<\/h2>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/4\/4a\/XMM-Newton_spacecraft_model.png\/300px-XMM-Newton_spacecraft_model.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:463px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">XMM-Newton is a satellite that observes astronomical X-ray sources. It was originally designed to last only 10 years. At this time (2024) it has been decided to keep it alive until 2026.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Among the astronomical sources he observed were galaxy clusters, featured in a story by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/en\/the-nai-team-galaxy-clusters\/\">the YES team.<\/a><br\/><br\/>The XMM-Newton launch from French Guiana is shown in the following video:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Launch of XMM-Newton by Ariane 5\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sKLLSxQRiN4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. 2002, Envisat, rocket 511<\/h2>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/1\/1b\/Envisatmod.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Envisat was a large earth-observing satellite. It has been inactive since 2012. It still orbits the Earth and is considered one of the &#8216;space&#8217; junks orbiting the Earth. Its dimensions are (23 x 10 x 5) meters. While active, it helped study atmospheric chemistry, ozone depletion, ocean biology, ocean temperatures, and more.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. 2004, Rosetta, rocket 518<\/h2>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/9\/9a\/Rosetta_spacecraft_model.png\/2560px-Rosetta_spacecraft_model.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:584px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rosetta left Earth in 2004 for a rendezvous with Comet 67P\/Churyumov\u2013Gerasimenko (67P). About 10 years it took its journey to go to its appointment!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>It reached its appointment in 2014. It dropped a box with the Greek name &#8216;philae&#8217; (&#8216;friend&#8217;) onto the comet.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>The Greek composer Vangelis deified this meeting with his creation:<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vangelis - Vangelis: Rosetta Timeline (Rosetta)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WSa3kkMQ574?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The previous video shows Rosetta&#8217;s entire journey to the comet and the placement of the &#8216;friend&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. 2009, Herschel + Planck, rocket 546<\/h2>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized is-style-rounded\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"387\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/issue-07-Ariane-387x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9783\" style=\"width:153px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/issue-07-Ariane-387x1024.jpg 387w, https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/issue-07-Ariane-113x300.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/issue-07-Ariane-76x200.jpg 76w, https:\/\/www.uni-mag.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/issue-07-Ariane.jpg 410w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" \/><\/figure>\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two satellites were launched simultaneously in 2009 by Ariane 5.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Herschel was the largest space telescope in the infrared until 2021 when the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was launched. The second satellite launched with Herschel was Planck. It helped the observation of the cosmic background. These observations are essential for building cosmological models that attempt to explain the beginning and end of the universe.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Both satellites lived until 2013.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. 2018, Bepi Colombo<\/h2>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This mission will study the closest planet to the Sun. It will find the characteristics of Mercury&#8217;s magnetic field. The mirror has a diameter of 6.5 meters. It consists of 18 individual small mirrors. It will reach Jupiter around 2031.
